This antique Victorian volume of Irish Essays and Others by Matthew Arnold was published in 1891 by Smith, Elder & Co. of London. Arnold, one of the most influential literary critics and cultural commentators of the Victorian era, wrote these essays during a time when questions surrounding Irish identity, politics, and culture were widely debated across Britain.
This copy is marked “Popular Edition,” a format released to make important literary works more accessible to a broader readership in the late 19th century. Though intended for everyday readers rather than collectors, books like this were still beautifully made and meant to be part of a well-read household library.
Features a dark brown cover and gilt font on binding. Please note the back cover shows evidence of old water damage and the top of the back cover is warped. The book still sits beautifully though on a shelf and the damage cannot be seen on the spine. Otherwise, the book is in good condition.
